Ready to Pride Out?

As many of us know, Pride festivals are happening all over the country during the last weekend of June (that’s in 2 weeks, folks!).  Here in Chicago, folks at Early to Rise and Early to Bed want you to drop in and get some gear to have a great, queertastic time! (During and after!)

Here’s the line-up for Chicago Pride Fest 2011.

DMCAnd if you want to enjoy an alternative pride festival, or simply go to another one – check out the annual Dyke March. Don’t identify as a dyke? That’s ok! Dyke March’s mission is to celebrate “dyke, queer, and transgender resiliance.” This year it’s happening in the South Shore neighborhood. And yours truly is helping to organize a Trans United contingent.

Of course, we all should remember why Pride is happening all over the U.S., and how LGBTQ and allies have fought tirelessly to win visibility and acceptance.

On June 28, 1969, the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, New York City, was attacked by the police. It’s aim was to terrorize queer people, and raiding these safe spaces in order to maintain moral “rule and order” over LGBTQ folks.

We’ve come a long way as a society from then, but as we celebrate, let us not forget the ongoing struggle for LGBTQ rights.

Happy Pride!
